What is Nondestructive Testing?
Nondestructive Testing (NDT) plays an important role in assuring that structural and mechanical components perform their function in a safe, reliable and cost-effective manner. NDT technicians perform the necessary tests to locate indicators and discontinuities that may cause failures or shutdowns in systems.
These tests are performed in a manner that does not affect the future usefulness of the object or material — hence the name "nondestructive". NDT allows for careful and thorough materials evaluation without the need for deconstruction or damage.
NDT is typically used at various points in a part's life cycle — for quality control prior to a component entering service, and while components are in use to detect service-related conditions caused by wear, fatigue, corrosion, stress, or other factors affecting reliability.
Hands-on Training Philosophy
At EGAI, each candidate is encouraged to practically conduct every NDT topic discussed — building real-world competence that translates directly to the inspection field.
ASNT NDT Level I & II Certification Courses
EGAI's NDT certification programme covers all major ASNT-recognised methods, equipping candidates for Level I and Level II certification examinations.
NDT Methods Covered
EGAI's NDT curriculum covers all major testing methods — from widely used foundational techniques to advanced inspection technologies deployed in the oil & gas, petrochemical, marine and construction sectors.
Visual Testing (VT)
The oldest and most common NDT technique — the first step in any inspection process. Visual testing uses human sensory systems, aided by magnifiers, borescopes and cameras to examine castings, forgings, machined components and weld elements.
Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT)
Used to detect surface and near-surface flaws in ferromagnetic materials such as iron, nickel and cobalt. MPT requires minimal surface preparation, making it one of the most commonly used NDE techniques for fast, reliable inspection.
Dye Penetrant Inspection (PT/LPI)
A widely applied, low-cost method for detecting surface-breaking defects in all non-porous materials — metals, plastics and ceramics. Used to find casting, forging and welding surface defects such as hairline cracks, surface porosity and fatigue cracks.
Radiographic Testing (RT)
Uses X-rays or gamma rays to view the internal structure of a component. Highly reproducible and suitable for a variety of materials. Radiographic data can be stored for later analysis. Widely used in the petrochemical industry for pressure vessels, valves and weld inspection.
Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
Utilises high-frequency sound waves to detect cracks and defects and measure material thickness. Suitable for large or irregularly shaped parts. Produces clearly defined images revealing cracks, weld grooves, fractures and material thickness — requiring access to only one side of the specimen.
Radiograph Film Interpretation (RTFI)
Involves three key steps — detection, interpretation and evaluation — using the radiographer's visual acuity. Identification of discontinuities in base metal, weld material and heat-affected zones is critical for structural integrity assessment and compliance with inspection codes.
Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT)
An advanced NDT method widely used in construction and power generation. Controls beam angle and focal distance for highly efficient defect detection. Used for weld inspection, thickness measurement, corrosion inspection and flaw detection in industrial components.
Eddy Current Testing (ECT)
An AC coil placed near the specimen generates circulating eddy currents that are affected by flaws and material variations. Changes in the coil's voltage and phase reveal surface and subsurface defects. Sensitivity can be very high with proper calibration.
Computed Tomography (CT)
A powerful NDE technique that produces 2-D and 3-D cross-sectional images from flat X-ray images. Reveals internal structure characteristics including dimensions, shape, internal defects and density — giving a complete non-invasive picture of component integrity.
